The VoiceLab is an arts mentorship initiative empowering people from diverse backgrounds to express their stories, identities, and experiences through art and visual storytelling. Through professional mentorship and public exhibitions and screenings, we help participants build creative confidence, foster mutual understanding, connect with wider communities, and strengthen their sense of belonging in Canada.
Our Story
Memory X Resonance
A Cultural Experience Connecting History, Memory and Community.
Memory X Resonance is a multidisciplinary cultural project that combines a historical exhibition, documentary moving image, live music, and immersive installation.
The event unfolds in two parts.
Visitors begin by exploring an exhibition tracing Hong Kong’s history from 1842 to 2020, highlighting key historical moments alongside successive waves of migration from Hong Kong to Canada through archival materials, photographs, artifacts, and interactive displays.
The experience continues with Memory X Resonance, 70-minute cinematic performance featuring documentary film, live music, and first-person narration. Through the story of three generations of one family, audiences journey through themes of home, identity, freedom, displacement, and remembrance.
Meet The Team
Alan Lau is an award-winning filmmaker and visual artist based in Toronto. His work explores memory, identity, displacement, and belonging through observational and essayistic cinema. His films have screened internationally, including at Busan, Doc Edge, and Odense. His feature documentary Rather Be Ashes Than Dust documents Hong Kong’s 2019 protests from a deeply personal perspective. Lau’s practice increasingly examines how migration transforms our relationship with memory and home. In Memory × Resonance, he traces these questions across three generations and two places – Hong Kong and Canada.
Ricker Choi’s career is in financial risk management. He began studying the piano at 13, after his family immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong. Having earnt the ARCT Diploma in Piano Performance at 18, Ricker enrolled in York University’s Schulich School of Business, where he earned BBA and MBA degrees. He is also a Financial Risk Manager.
He used his music and art to advocate for democracy in Hong Kong. He composed a solo piano work “Hong Kong Rhapsody” (香港狂想曲) in honor of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement. He is also a prolific artist and his protest art has been exhibited in Hong Kong, London (United Kingdom), New York (USA), Toronto, Edmonton and Alberta (Canada), Tokyo (Japan), and Dublin (Ireland), Prague, Taiwan, and magazine Broken Pencil.
