About Us<\/em><\/p>\n

The VoiceLab is an arts mentorship initiative empowering people from diverse backgrounds to express their stories, identities, and experiences through art and visual storytelling. Through professional mentorship and public exhibitions and screenings, we help participants build creative confidence, foster mutual understanding, connect with wider communities, and strengthen their sense of belonging in Canada.<\/em><\/p>\n

A Cultural Experience Connecting History, Memory and Community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Memory X Resonance is a multidisciplinary cultural project that combines a historical exhibition, documentary moving image, live music, and immersive installation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The event unfolds in two parts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Visitors begin by exploring an exhibition tracing Hong Kong’s history from 1842 to 2020, highlighting key historical moments alongside successive waves of migration from Hong Kong to Canada through archival materials, photographs, artifacts, and interactive displays.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The experience continues with Memory X Resonance, 70-minute cinematic performance featuring documentary film, live music, and first-person narration. Through the story of three generations of one family, audiences journey through themes of home, identity, freedom, displacement, and remembrance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Alan Lau<\/span><\/span><\/strong> is an award-winning filmmaker and visual artist based in Toronto. <\/span>H<\/span>is work explores memory, identity, displacement, and belonging through observational and essayistic cinema. His films have screened internationally, including at Busan, Doc Edge, and Odense. His feature documentary <\/span><\/span>Rather Be Ashes Than Dust<\/span><\/span> documents Hong Kong\u2019s 2019 protests from a deeply personal perspective. Lau\u2019s practice increasingly examines how migration transforms our relationship with memory and home. In <\/span><\/span>Memory \u00d7 Resonance<\/span><\/span>, he traces these questions across three generations and two places<\/span><\/span> – <\/span><\/span>Hong Kong and Canada.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n

Ricker Choi<\/strong>\u2019s career is in financial risk management.\u202f He began studying the piano at 13, after his family immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong.\u202f Having earnt the ARCT Diploma in Piano Performance at 18, Ricker enrolled in York University\u2019s Schulich School of Business, where he earned BBA and MBA degrees.\u202f He is also a Financial Risk Manager.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>He used his music and art to advocate for democracy in Hong Kong.\u202f He composed a solo piano work “Hong Kong Rhapsody” (<\/span><\/span>\u9999\u6e2f\u72c2\u60f3\u66f2<\/span><\/span>)\u202f in honor of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.\u202f He is also a prolific <\/span>artist<\/span> and his protest art has been <\/span>exhibited<\/span> in Hong Kong, London (United Kingdom), New York (USA), Toronto, Edmonton and Alberta (Canada), Tokyo (Japan), and Dublin (Ireland), Prague, Taiwan, and magazine Broken Pencil.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n
